Description

How can we help parents and children be more confident about active mobility?

Confidence is one of the most powerful qualities parents and children can process and share. It’s infectious. Building confidence is dependent on encouraging new experience in safe ways and environments. Parental confidence in allowing sensible and safe active mobility plays an essential role in the development of independent, confident and resultant children.

School active travel programs help build parental confidence to trust their children’s abilities, avoid the ‘fear’ traps and share ‘can do’ attitude towards incremental independent, safe, active travel to schools.

Dr Michael Carr- Gregg and Dr Sharinne Crawford will provide principals, teachers, parents and student leaders with insights and strategies to create ‘can do’ attitudes in parents and children. Attitudes that are the foundation of a ‘have a go’ school culture towards active travel.

Keynote Speakers

Dr Michael Carr-Gregg – Renowned Adolescent and Child Psychologist and author
Dr Michael Carr-Gregg presents evidence on the critical role of sensible ‘risk-taking’ plays in the development of independent, confident and resilient children. Based on the evidence, Michael explores how to apply active travel programs to build these attributes in children.

Dr Sharinne Crawford – Research Fellow with Judith Lumley Centre
Informed by a three-year research project on parental fears in children independent mobility, Dr Sharinne Crawford will provide insights into the power of parental perceptions, judgments and attitudes on children’s mobility. Based on the evidence, she will offer practical approaches to equipping parents and students with a ‘can do’ attitude to safe active mobility.
